SUSAN SHEU is seeking re-election to the Los Angeles County Central Committee (LACDP). She is a writer with a background in public health, the wife of a fellow activist and small business owner, and the mother of three children who attended public schools in Santa Monica. She has lived in Los Angeles for the last 30 years. A Democratic voter since the age of 18, she began her political engagement by paying attention to the life experience of her mother, who was a single mother and survivor of domestic violence and who worked for many years in a shelter as an intake worker for other victims of domestic violence and their children. Susan attended Vassar College on a full scholarship, where she majored in history, and after working in nonprofit fundraising for universities and the arts, she earned masters degrees in public health/epidemiology at UCLA and in nonfiction writing at Bennington College. Currently she serves as the Regional Vice Chair of the LACDP and on leadership boards of the California Democratic Party, the Santa Monica Democratic Party, and the Women’s Reproductive Rights Assistance Project. She has worked with the Grassroots Democrats HQ for the last several years in the efforts to get out the vote in key California swing districts and other pivotal elections nationwide.
Prior to college, she attended public school in Wisconsin, where had a seventh grade civics teacher who taught her how to read a newspaper and evaluate political and media claims and where she had a 10th grade teacher who had been a soldier who liberated Nazi concentration camps and showed students the photos each spring as part of studying World War II, so that there would be no glossing over recent history’s horrors and the natural endpoint of bigotry and political violence. Because of this life and educational background, her activism focuses on reproductive justice, gender equality, reducing gun violence, voting rights, and protecting democracy. While we are in a precarious place as a nation in 2024, we are also in need of a renewal of community and civic engagement and the most dedicated public servants at the local and state level in order to bring forth a future that fulfills the unachieved promises of American democracy. That is why she does this work for equality and would be honored to have your vote to continue as a voting delegate to the LACDP.
